Midlands Two West (South)

NEWBOLD kept themselves in second place ahead of Saturday’s local derby at third placed Old Laurentians with a comfortable victory against lowly Pershore on Saturday.

The hosts started at a ferocious pace and went ahead when James McGill crossed after Phil Reed and Ben Mann combined.

Reed quickly extended the lead to 10-0 after collecting the restart and making a 40-yard dash to the line before Sean Fereday crashed over for Lloyd Warner to convert.

Leading 17-0 after just ten minutes, Newbold took their foot off the gas and that allowed Pershore to hit back with an unconverted try.

The visitors applied further pressure before half time but were unable to close the gap further and Newbold left the field knowing they needed to step things up again in the second half.

Ed Scott ensured Newbold made the perfect start to the second half when he finished off a fine move with a try converted by Warner before Mark Hyde collected the rebound and made good ground.

He fed captain Danny Facer who brushed aside a couple of defenders and found Danny Treharne in support who made his way to the line, Warner converted.

Pershore ran a couple of penalties that came their way but lost possession when Treharne intercepted and Fereday, on his shoulder, took the pass to bulldoze over the line for another converted try and a 38-5 lead.

The visitors refused to buckle and stunned Newbold by scoring two converted tries but with ten minutes on the clock Newbold took control again.

A clever kick from Reed found Mann in space and he raced forward before swapping passes with Reed to score.

Reed scored the game’s final try when his pace proved too much for Pershore to deal with before converting with a drop goal to complete the scoring.
