NEW police recruits in Warwickshire will earn £3,000 above the amount recommended by a recent national review into officers' pay.
Warwickshire Police has announced a starting salary of £21,999 - the highest possible allowed within new national guidelines - after the Winsor review recommended new officers receive only £19,000.
Chief Constable Andy Parker said the decision had been taken to attract the best talent into the Warwickshire force.
"We need to attract the best possible recruits into the police service and I believe a lower starting salary would hinder that ambition," he said.
"The role of the police constable is demanding and at times dangerous – this needs to be reflected in their pay."
Police and Crime Commissioner for Warwickshire Ron Ball added: "I fully endorse the decision of the Chief Constable. I do not agree with the lowering of starting salaries for police officers. It directly contravenes Mr Winsor's stated aim to improve the professional status of policing."
West Mercia Police, the force Warwickshire is now in a partnership with, has also agreed to pay new recruits £21,999 annually.
Neither force is recruiting externally at the moment and both are only accepting student officer applications to meet short-term vacancies.
