AN UNDERAGE driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a crash in Rugby.
The 15-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested after he lost control of the Peugeot van he was driving, causing him to hit a lamppost in Parkfield Road around 4.30pm on Wednesday (April 3).
A 17-year-old boy was thrown from the van and died shortly afterwards from his injuries.
The 15-year-old Rugby youth, has been further charged with dangerous driving, burglary, driving without a licence and insurance, failing to stop after an accident and aggravated vehicle taking.
Ambulance crews were quickly on the scene but could do nothing to save the life of the teenager.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “On arrival at the scene crews found a boy lying in the road. The boy who had suffered serious injuries was immediately assessed and was found to be in traumatic cardiac arrest. Full resuscitation techniques were carried out at the scene but unfortunately despite best efforts of ambulance crews nothing could be done to save the boy and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.
“A second boy found in the van was treated for facial injuries. The boy was fully immobilised before being conveyed to University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire, via land ambulance, for further assessment and treatment.”
A 13-year-old boy, who was also in the van, has been charged with burglary dwelling and aggravated vehicle taking.
Both teenagers were set to appear in Nuneaton Youth Court this morning (Friday.)
A third man - aged 19 - was released without charge.
