TRIBUTE has been paid to former Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher by MP Mark Pawsey.
The Conservative MP for Rugby tweeted: "On a delegation to Middle East and have just heard about death of Lady Thatcher. Sad day. Proud to have met her just after my election."
And in a statement he said: "Lady Thatcher was Conservative leader and Prime Minister at the time I was developing my political ideas and had a big influence on me.
"She made changes which I believe led to our country's recent prosperity and increased our standing in the world."
Lady Thatcher was Britain's first woman Prime Minister, winning three elections and serving from 1979 to 1990.
She died yesterday morning (Monday) after suffering a stroke.
In 1980 Rugby welcomed Baroness Thatcher a year into her premiership on July 4 1980. Hundreds of people turned out to meet her as she walked around the town.
And in 2007 she visited Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome to the north of the Rugby to see a restored Vulcan bomber to mark 25 years since the Falklands War.
While there she met crews who flew the now famous plane during the 74-day conflict.
Baroness Thatcher was Prime Minister at the time of the 1982 conflict, which started after a long standing territorial dispute between Britain and Argentina over who should control the south Atlantic islands.
Current Prime Minster David Cameron called her a 'great Briton' and the Queen spoke of her sadness at the death.
