Floral tributes were left on Parkfield Road for Oliver Hawker, the 17-year-old killed when he was thrown from a stolen van which crashed in Newbold. The driver, a boy aged 15, has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years' detention.
AN UNDERAGE driver who crashed a van has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a popular Rugby teenager.
The 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested after he lost control of the Peugeot van he was driving and hit a lamppost in Parkfield Road at around 4.30pm on Wednesday April 3.
A 17-year-old boy, named as Ollie Hawker, was thrown from the van, and although ambulance crews were quickly on the scene they could do nothing to save the life of the teenager who died from his injuries shortly afterwards.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "On arrival at the scene crews found a boy lying in the road. The boy, who had suffered serious injuries, was immediately assessed and was found to be in traumatic cardiac arrest.
"Full resuscitation techniques were carried out but unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews, nothing could be done to save the boy and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.
"A second boy found in the van was treated for facial injuries and was fully immobilised before being conveyed to University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire for further assessment and treatment."
The 15-year-old and a 13-year-old boy both appeared at Nuneaton Youth Court on Friday April 5.
As well as causing death by dangerous driving, the 15-year-old admitted burglary, driving without a licence and insurance, failing to stop after an accident and aggravated vehicle taking.
A 13-year-old boy, who was also in the van, pleaded guilty to burglary and aggravated vehicle taking.
The older youth will appear at Warwick Crown Court on Friday (April 19) for sentencing, while the younger boy is due back at Nuneaton Youth Court on May 1.
Tributes and flowers have since been left at the scene of the crash while hundreds have signed up to a Facebook group set up in Ollie's memory.
Shannon Lee wrote: "Rest in peace Wolly, still hasn't sunk in yet. Until we meet again, look after yourself. I know you're watching over everyone. We all miss and love you so much.
And Chloe Wood wrote: "Born a legend and died a legend, my love for you will never end and I'll never forget you, I promise my best boy."
