Cricket:
Stipanovic shines as Barby triumph

By Monday 13 May 2013 Updated: 14/05 10:51

BARBY dodged the rain to continue their fine start to the Warwickshire League Division One season with a six-wicket home victory against previously unbeaten Pak Shaheen.

The hosts opted to bowl first and Rory Long (1-16) soon accounted for Shoab Manazar (0) to make the initial breakthrough.

However, it was the introduction of Stev Stipanovic into the attack that really put Barby on the front foot as he rolled back the years to claim 5-47.

Tom Gleghorn offered excellent support to take 3-43 as only Sultan Mahmood (44) offered any serious resistance as the innings closed on 137.

Barby never really looked in any difficulty in reply as contributions from Simon Gear (20), Tom Gleghorn (30) Dave Watson (32), Joel Gleghorn (22no) and Loz Mead (22no) helped them to victory at 141-5 from 34.3 overs.

The victory sees Barby, who travel to Marston Green on Saturday, sit just two points off top spot.

THE 2nds came away from Bedworth with a rain affected winning draw.

Troy Reeves (2-66) and Adam Shay (1-34) bowled well to restrict Bedworth early on but following the third rain delay of the fame, the hosts upped the tempo.

Parker (61) and Spacey (50no) helped them to 200-6 from 37 overs before they declared with Phil Beagley picking up a wicket to go with excellent run outs from Matt Beagley and Barry Taylor.

A solid start in reply say Barby reach 80-2 after 18 overs with Colin Bendal (29) and Taylor (30) going well.

The rain returned though and when play could finally resume, the visitors needed 77 off nine overs for a winning draw.

Setting about the target with gusto, Adam Shay (24) and Rob Stipanovic (36no) saw Barby reach their aim at 166-5, moving themselves off the bottom of the table at the same time.

DESPITE the best efforts of both sides, the Sunday XI saw their game at Napton abandoned due to rain.

The game got started and with the help of an unbeaten 61 from Barry Taylor, Rugby reached 129-3 off 23 overs but rain took over from that point meaning no more play was possible.
