By Monday 08 July 2013 Updated: 08/07 12:11

A MURDER is alleged to have taken place in the town centre yesterday.

The area around the clock tower was cordoned off and guarded by officers yesterday following the incident, which happened at 5am on Sunday (July 7).

26 year old David Ryding of Moreton-in-Wirral, Merseyside, was declared dead at 3.30am today after suffering a head injury.

A 21 year-old Rugby man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Ryding was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire and put on a life support machine. However, it soon became apparent that nothing could be done to save him.

Before Ryding was declared dead, police had initially arrested the murder suspect on suspicion of serious assault. Two other men, aged 25 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of affray.

It is known that several potential witnesses were in the area – near the taxi rank at the Clock Tower in Market Place – at the time. Officers are appealing for anyone who saw anything to contact the police on , or anonymously via Crimestoppers on .
