Hot weather exploited by sneak-in thieves

SNEAK-in burglars have stolen £8000 in cash from a Newbold couple while they relaxed in their back garden.

Two thieves walk into the elderly couple's house though an unlocked door and took the money from a drawer in an upstairs room.

Police have warned that criminals could take advantage of the hot weather by walking in to homes while occupants soak up the sun.

Warwickshire Police's crime prevention manager George Stepney said: “The message is clear: make sure you lock your doors, patio doors and windows, even if you are only outside in the garden.“

“Whenever we get fine weather the police see the number of burglaries go up where the thieves have been able to walk in through an unlocked door or climb in through an open window.

“You just don’t know who is wandering round trying door handles. An unlocked door is an open invitation for someone to sneak inside and steal your property.

“It is distressing enough to find out that someone has been into your home and stolen your property, but also remember that some insurance policies don’t cover you if there is no sign of a forced entry – you may not be covered for your losses.”

Anyone with any information about the Newbold burglary should contact the police by calling 101.
