FIRST-class cricket could become a regular fixture in Rugby after thousands flocked to Rugby School playing fields on Saturday.

A full house of 3,000 spectators basked in the sun as Warwickshire took on Glamorgan in a Friends Life t20 fixture, the first of it's kind to be held in the town.

And negotiations are underway for Warwickshire to play a pro-40 game at The Close next year.

Sadly, Warwickshire's performance was not as bright as the sunshine. They lost by eight wickets with with Varun Chopra top scoring with 30.

But the result hardly mattered as the crowd lapped up one of the most significant sporting events Rugby has seen in the 190 years since William Webb Ellis famously graced the very same pitch.

Mark Semmence, the school's assistant headmaster and master in charge of cricket, said: “It was a fantastic success. The weather was beautiful and the fans had a great time.

“There's a clamour for first-class cricket to return to Rugby School."
