WILLOUGHBY u11s fell agonisingly short in their bid for Rugby and District League Cup glory when losing by two runs against Long Itchington at Rugby School on Sunday morning.
A large crowd enjoyed a tense and thoroughly entertaining final which saw Long Itchington win the toss and opt to bat first.
Starting at 200 runs, Long Itchington set a useful target for Willoughby to chase, making 271-2 with a good batting performances from their four pairs.
They did not have matters all their own way as Sam Wincott-Thomas took both wickets to fall with good support from all of the Willoughby attack.
Willoughby’s reply started well with Ethan Porter and Jake Quinney setting the foundations, which was cautiously worked on by James Andrews and Sam Middlemiss.
Dom Whitfield and Liam Franks stepped up the pace for the third pairing, to set up a tight finish for the final pair of Harry Brown and Wincott-Thomas.
With Willoughby creeping towards their target and slight favourites in the last two overs, they lost their only wicket with only five balls remaining to slightly hand the initiative back.
A wide meant a boundary was needed off the final ball, but Willoughby could only get two to end just short.
