JON Bean held his nerve to send over a late penalty and secure victory for injury hit OLs in a dramatic contest at Market Bosworth on Saturday.
Forced into making seven changes, OLs took a while to settle and found themselves 11-0 down before Bean’s 18th minute penalty put them on the scoreboard.
Stringing some phases together for the first time, OLs scored their first try of the game when Joe Shore and Lee Hersey combined for Marc Eagles to cross. Bean’s well struck conversion reduced the gap to 11-10.
A penalty for the home allowed them to go in four points clear at the break but OLs came out with the slope in their favour at the start of the second half and they soon set about making it count.
Dom Hammond was first to touch down following a driving maul and Troy Owen followed him over from a scrum, Bean’s conversion giving the visitors a 22-14 lead.
The hosts were in mood to surrender though and two penalties brought them right back into contention before Bean stretched the lead to five again with one of OLs’ own.
Slack defending from the visitors allowed Bosworth’s outside centre to cross for an unconverted try that levelled the scores before Bean edged OLs ahead again in injury time.
That was not the end of the drama though as the home side were given another chance to level when awarded a penalty 35m out but the effort drifted just wide of the posts as the visitors held on.
Two wins out of three marks a satisfactory start for OLs to life in Midlands One ahead of what is sure to be a tough test on Saturday when they make the long journey to Whitchurch. A coach for players and supporters will leave Fenley Field at 11.45am.
THE 2nds suffered a 32-20 defeat when they made the trip to Stratford 2nds.
Greg Loydall’s early penalty for OLs was soon cancelled out but he was also on hand to convert the game’s opening try, scored by Aaron Metcalfe.
OLs failed to deal with the restart properly which allowed Stratford to reply with a try of their own, cutting the half time lead to 10-8.
Stratford scored another unconverted try to lead at the start of the second half before Loydall kicked three more points for OLs.
Loydall then converted his own try but Stratford hit the front for the remainder of the contest, adding a penalty and two tries, one of which was converted to emerge triumphant.
