THE final ever flight of a Vickers VC10 RAF refuelling tanker came to an end at Bruntingthorpe Proving ground and Airfield.
The VC10 ZA147 landed at the former RAF station and USAF Cold War bomber base last Wednesday in front of a 200-strong crowd of enthusiasts and pupils from Gilmorton Chandler Primary School who were allowed into the normally secure site for the occasion.
Bruntingthorpe managing director Dave Walton said: "It was an historic day for us as well as for the VC10 and as so many people with an affinity for the aircraft travelled to watch the landing it was the least we could do."
The ZA147 was the final long-range British airliner designed and built by Surrey-based Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd to be retired after 47 years' military service.
It served in Serbia, Iraq and Afghanistan, and last flew an air-to-air refuelling mission just days before its retirement.
Group Captain Steve Lushington, station commander of RAF Brize Norton who landed the aircraft in Bruntingthorpe, added: "It was very poignant day but should be a celebration of everything the VC10 has done, a quite incredible service history."
