PLANS have finally been submitted for a housing development on the old Rugby college site.
Warwickshire College has been working on detailed proposals for over a year with a planning application for 131 homes and 16 extra care units handed to the borough council last week.
It is understood to be keen to sell on the 10-acre plot of land on Lower Hillmorton Road - which has stood empty for three years - to a house builder as soon as it can.
A college spokeswoman told us: "We are expecting a decision on this towards the end of the year. If the application is approved, the site will then be marketed for 10 weeks following which there will be an appraisal of tenders prior to a decision being made."
The campus closed in 2010 and relocated to Leicester Road.
It was thought as many as 180 homes could be built on the old site, but a recent demand for larger family homes in the area means the number will be significantly lower, said planning consultants Harris Lamb.
They will be mainly three bedroom homes with 93 planned alongside just five two bedroom homes and 33 four -bedroom homes.
There will be two small parks while tree preservation orders will prevent the felling of several mature trees already on the land.
The entrance to the old college is expected to remain as the main way into the development with two others planned, one of which will go direct to the extra care units.
Coun Jerry Roodhouse told The Observer concerns remained over access and whether there would be enough parking spaces.
The college, originally known as East Warwickshire College, was originally on Clifton Road before moving to Lower Hillmorton Road. In 2003 it merged with Warwickshire College and a proposed move to the old cattle market was dropped in 2007 in favour of Leicester Road.
The old buildings were demolished last year.
- Plans will be on show at Paddox Methodist Church next Friday and Saturday (October 18 and 19), and again at Rogers Hall on Deerings Road on Saturday, October 26.
