The 31-year-old from Coventry's DAF lorry was involved in a collision with a Ford Ka driven by a 65-year-old man who died at the scene, Northamptonshire Police said.
He has not yet been identified.
It happened on the southbound carriageway near the junction of Long Buckby Wharf at 6.45pm on Monday.
A police spokesman said the lorry driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was currently in police custody.
