Free parking bid to lure shoppers into town

Free parking will boost businesses, said Coun Heather Timms.

PARKING will be free at the John Barford car park on the four Saturdays leading up to Christmas.

The festive offer begins this Saturday after 10am.

Last year the borough council and town management firm Rugby First offered free parking after 3pm at all the town centre car parks in November and December.

It was deemed a success but is understood to have proved costly at around £9,000 between both organisations. And in previous years parking charges have been cut at all council car parks.

In neighbouring Lutterworth charges scrapped at the town's car parks on Church Close, Chapel Street, George Street and Station Road on the final three Saturdays before Christmas Day.

It starts on December 7 - the date of a national Small Business Saturday campaign to encourage people to shop locally at independent retailers.

Broughton Astley does not have any fee-charging car parks.

Coun Heather Timms, Rugby council's economy spokesman, said: "We hope the free parking offer can deliver a real boost to businesses in the town centre during the festive season.

"Residents who choose to shop local for Christmas can save time, save fuel and save money by taking advantage of the free parking offer."

The John Barford car park closes at 7pm.

Two weeks ago we reported how Mike O'Connor from J Parriss' Jewellers on Regent Street was offering to pay customers' parking.
