Rugby Welsh 24 Wellesbourne 29
Midlands Five West (South)
WELSH had to settle for two bonus points from a frustrating home defeat against Wellesbourne on Saturday which saw them just fall short despite launching a stirring late fightback.
With the elements in their favour in the first half, Welsh dominated as their forwards won plenty of possession with Jamie Roach winning plenty of line-out ball and King making some terrific forward charges.
However, due to a combination of good defence and poor options close to the Welsh line, they were unable to turn their possession into points.
Wellesbourne proved more clinical when a chance came their way and they scored an unconverted try shortly before half time to lead 5-0.
A second converted score added to Wellesbourne’s advantage but Welsh responded quickly with Matt Richards crashing over from short range.
Two quick converted tries midway through the half gave Wellesbourne a 26-5 lead at which stage Welsh seemed out of contention.
But they suddenly began to take far better options and forward and backs linked brilliantly to cause real problems for the opposition.
Welsh scored three tries in a ten minute spell through the impressive Angus Wilson, Andy Higham and Jason Reynolds, two of which were converted by Wilson.
That got Welsh to within two points but Wellesbourne were awarded a penalty which they successfully kicked from the final play of the contest to secure their victory.
Welsh make the trip to local rivals Rugby St Andrews 2nds on Saturday for a 2.15pm kick-off.
