ROD McGowan picked up Rugby Triathlon Club’s most prestigious award - The Captain’s Award - at the annual awards dinner on Saturday.

On presenting the trophy, outgoing Club Captain Keith Edwards said: “So many members this year have achieved significant personal milestones, six have completed tough Iron Man races, eight the half-ironman distance and more than ever before have raced throughout the country. It has been difficult to choose the athlete of the year, but Rod McGowan fulfilled the judging criteria.

“He has improved massively in the last two years and has moved from being a ‘middle of the pack’ athlete to an extremely competitive one who consistently runs at the front of races.

“His goal at the start of the year was to qualify for the World Championships in Las Vegas and through real hard work, dedication and commitment fulfilled this ambition. I look forward to seeing what he can achieve in 2014.”
