Southern League Division One Central
VALLEY left it late to secure all three points for the second time in four days on Tuesday night with Seb Lake-Gaskin’s 80th minute goal securing victory from the trip to Bell Close.
The latest victory came from a scrappy affair on a bobbly surface which meant both teams struggled to find their rhythm and goalscoring chances were at a premium.
The returning David Kolodynski was the visitors’ main threat early on and he twice broke free down the right before shooting wide both times.
Lake-Gaskin also went close with a long range effort from fully 25-yards before he missed probably the half’s best chance after 32 minutes when he side-footed Kolodynski’s cut-back wide.
Valley thought they were in front shortly after when Leighton keeper Brad Kirkwood appeared to fumble Kolodynski’s low, hard cross over his own line, but the linesman did not agree.
Ahead of the interval, Kirkwood denied Kolodynski from Josh O’Grady’s cross and O’Grady himself also tested the home keeper with an effort from the edge of the box.
Leighton’s only first half opportunity of note also came towards its conclusion when Dom Marsala pulled one wide.
The second period saw Rugby create even less to trouble Kirkwood although Justin Marsden did carve out one opportunity for himself after cutting in from the left - but he then stabbed the ball wide of the target.
Play became increasingly scrappy after that and the home side’s tactics began to frustrate Stringer’s men, with Leighton almost breaking the deadlock when Marsala’s shot from close range was somehow blocked by Mason Rowley.
The game’s defining moment came in the 80th minute though, after Kolodynski had played in Ellis Myles down the right hand side, with the full-back’s cross from the byline then met by Lake-Gaskin - who composed himself well before firing home into the top corner.
Ben Gallant slid his shot wide late in the game as Rugby held on for a sixth league win in eight attempts on the road this season.
