LUTTERWORTH Golf Club’s head greenkeeper Jon Barr has become the 63rd BIGGA (British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association Ltd) member to achieve Master Greenkeeper status.
Jon, who began his studies seven years ago, has studied during the evenings over the last three or four months after a hard day at work to give him the best chance of passing the final stage Case Study and Technical Examination.
Recognised as a prestigious greenkeeping industry award, the Certificate is achieved in three stages.
In stage one a minimum of 200 credits must be earned for various formal and informal education and training and for years of greenkeeping experience.
To progress to stage two and three, candidates must have ten years working as a greenkeeper, three years working as a Head Greenkeeper/Course Manager/Superintendent and two years on their current golf course in the position of Head Greenkeeper/Course Manager/Superintendent.
Stage Two involves an assessment of golf course operation by two Master Greenkeepers during the growing season and covers staff organisation, financial management, record and stock control, management communication, course development programme, maintenance compound, machinery and irrigation and course presentation.
The final Stage Three involves sitting two, three-hour examinations, a Case Study and a Technical paper.
Thanks to Jon’s hard work, Lutterworth has a golf course that is recognised as one of the best in the area.
