Coventry Technical 17 Rugby Welsh 36
Midlands Five West (South)
AFTER a succession of frustrating narrow defeats, Welsh deservedly clinched their first league victory of the season with this bonus point win over Coventry Tech on Saturday.
Welsh, as in many of their previous matches, dominated the opening exchanges, but could only come away with a penalty from Guy Shaw.
Tech responded quickly with a good three-quarter move which saw them score a converted try.
However, Welsh were in determined mood and their forwards in particular performed well throughout.
From a five-yard lineout an excellent catch and drive saw Rob Haddock crash over with Angus Wilson converting.
Welsh continued to generally dominate the opening half and increased their lead as half time approached when good three-quarter play involving Bond and Buckland enabled Guy Shaw to score in the corner, converted well by Wilson.
The second half saw Tech take the game to Welsh and they soon reduced the lead with their powerful No 8 scoring a converted try.
However, Welsh came back and camped on the opposition line. Solid defence kept them at bay but eventually Jamie Cranham crashed over from short range for a try which Wilson converted.
Welsh appeared in control but the Tech winger intercepted a pass to give his team further hope with a try.
In the final ten minutes Welsh kept the game tight with their forwards matching the Tech's physical approach.
Jack Taylor nearly scored with a long kick and chase before hooker Wayne Grant crashed over following a series of forward drives to give Welsh their bonus point try.
James Buckland sealed their victory with a last minute try and Wilson added the extra points.
This was an excellent team effort and, with a full squad for the first time in a number of weeks, Welsh will hope they can build on this result when they host Keresley on December 14.
