Lions get ready for semi final

RUGBY Lions go into their Junior Vase semi final against Cleethorpes on Saturday top of the league and unbeaten after a 33-0 home win against Wellesbourne.

However, the match turned out to be a friendly in the end as Wellesbourne did not have a full team and the referee awarded Lions the points.

The Lions then gave Wellesbourne two player and had a 50 minute match, which was abandoned after 50 minutes dues to the storms that rocked the midlands.

“Last weekend was a psychological battle as they only had 13 players and we were awarded five points by the referee,” said player and head coach Rob Walton.

“But full credit to Wellesbourne for agreeing to still come and then playing a friendly match.

“We were expected to win and they had nothing to lose and in the biting conditions we had to push ourselves and motivate ourselves.”

The match was supposed to be a good preparation for the semi final and mid-table Wellesbourne at full strength could have pushed the Lions a lot more than they did but Walton’s side are showing signs of well drilled unit.

“We had a good training session in the week and we have some players back from injury and we are going into the cup to win” he said.

“We have already played teams higher up than us in the cup and beaten them and Cleethorpes are also one tier above so we know what we have to do.

“They have played three teams below them in the cup so haven’t been tested yet.

“Anything can happen in the cup and this is a massive game for us. We have been on a massive journey and we are starting to build trust and passion.

“The lads have been fantastic and have improved 100 per cent since the beginning of the season.”

The Lions are playing for a place in the final of the vase on March 15 against Long Buckby or Cannock.
