Welsh push past Warwickians

Rugby Welsh 17 Warwickian 15

SECOND placed Warwickian travelled to Rugby Welsh with high hopes of continuing their promotion push in the Midlands 5 West (South).

Welsh chose to play against the strong wind in the first half but were soon 7-0 down after failing to clear their lines.

Strong defence kept Warwickian out despite being pinned in their own half for long periods. Warwickian added a penalty after Welsh were forced to concede a number of penalties.

Welsh continued to defend well with James Buckland and Andy Higham outstanding.

This paid dividends when a quick penalty in their own half led to an attack being stopped just under the posts and good work by Rob Haddock sent Jamie Cranham crashing over for an unconverted try to reduce the gap before half time.

With the wind at their back in the second half Welsh pressurised Warwickians for long periods until the game was temporarily halted for a fierce hail and lightning storm.

At the resumption, in atrocious conditions, Welsh levelled the scores after a powerful forward drive allowing Wayne Grant to come up with the try.

Welsh continued to play for position but a Warwickian break away score gave them the lead in the closing stages.

However Welsh, to their credit, launched one more attack and a strong run from Chris King enabled Cranham to force his way over under the posts with Guy Shaw adding the winning conversion.

Welsh, who move into ninth spot will be hoping to continue this success in their forthcoming league matches starting with Wellesbourne on February 15.
