Schoolboy jets stateside for cancer therapy

TWELVE-year-old Adrian Secareanu has flown out to America to begin specialist treatment against a rare form of cancer.

The Observer reported last month how the Princethorpe College pupil who lives in Overslade had secured funding from the NHS to have treatment against Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma - a tumour which is located in his neck and jaw - at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute.

He is one of only 77 people in the UK since 1967 to have Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma.

And after being diagnosed in 2012 and having several operations to remove it from his neck and jaw, the Proton Therapy should prevent it returning in a more aggressive form.

The treatment - which directs radiation treatment to precisely where it is needed with minimal damage to surrounding tissue - will last for around three months.

Charity Kids ‘N’ Cancer is currently helping to raise the £10,000 needed to enable his mum and dad to stay with him in America with £3,000 collected so far in the online appeal at justgiving.com.

Founder Mike Hyman said: "We wish Adrian and his family well. The response from the public has been fantastic and we’d like to thank everyone who has donated to the campaign.

"We will be supporting the family throughout their journey in America and providing assistance wherever is needed. So we need more funds to make sure the family remains together throughout the treatment period."
