MARC Ford - the former lead guitarist with multi-million selling rockers the Black Crowes - is to play a gig at the Coal Vaults in Coventry.

The man widely hailed as the most gifted rock guitarists of his generation will play songs from his new album Holy Ghost at the venue in the city's canal basin on Friday, May 23.

It is one of just seven dates he is playing around the UK this month.

Ford has fronted his own bands such as the Neptune Blues Club and the Sinners as well as producing for others since leaving the Black Crowes in 1997.

But he never severed his ties with the group - named The Most Rock 'n' Roll Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World by Melody Maker magazine - and briefly rejoined them for the reunion in 2005 before going solo.

Speaking at the release of his album last month, Ford said: "Maybe people still want me to be a guitar hero and that’s it, I’m determined to change that mindset."
