St Cross gets its first dedicated bereavement room

A DULL administration office at St Cross has been transformed into a bereavement room.

The room was painted by staff from Coventry Building Society and furnished with new carpets, furniture and wall decorations paid for by the hospital's Friends' group.

And The Sunflower Room was chosen as its name from a number of suggestions put forward by staff.

Kay Holleran, an emergency nurse practitioner who put forward the suggestion, said: "My inspiration for the name came from yellow being my favourite colour and I felt a sunny and bright feel to the room would be uplifting at a time of bereavement."

The room is used as a place where bereaved relatives can meet hospital staff to receive personal effects and be advised on the relevant formalities.

Juliet Starkey, manager at St Cross, said: "I like many staff in the hospital, live in the town and we are also patients from time to time.

"This room will make a great difference to the atmosphere in which relatives and staff meet at a difficult time."

Sarah Marks, manager of the Rugby branch of The Coventry, added: "We were delighted to help with this project which was great fun and a new extension of the way in which we support the great work done by the Friends."
