Barby ease past lowly Atherstone

BARBY returned to winning ways on Saturday as they defeated bottom placed Atherstone by seven wickets at the BCG.

After winning the toss captain Watson had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat under overcast conditions conducive to swing.

Unfortunately there was rather too much swing early on, which resulted in rather too many extras being conceded as the Atherstone openers cruised to 50 without loss.

Watson decided to take pace off the ball which immediately paid off with wickets starting to fall at regular intervals to the guile of Tom Gleghorn (3-34) and James Wynn-Evans (2-38).

Skipper Watson weighed in with three quick wickets and Rob Stipanovic one as Atherstone were restricted to 154-9 off their 50 overs, with opener Alcock unbeaten on 56.

After the early loss of Joel Gleghorn who was to make amends with a century on the Sunday, brother Tom (64) and veteran Wynn Evans (45) went about building a match-winning partnership.

Both were dismissed prior to reaching the finishing line but Lawrence Mead and Paul William Sinclair knocked off the remaining runs to secure a win by seven wickets on 157-3.

Overall it was a solid performance with bat, ball and in the field which sees Barby climb to sixth in the division ahead of Saturday's visit to Pak Shaheen.
