PLANS to build houses on a popular recreation ground have been met with anger.
Details of an outline proposal to build 62 homes on Oakfield Playing Field off Bilton Road were posted to residents in the area on Tuesday (October 7).
The news prompted criticism on social media sites.
Kelly Reed said she was shocked, and added there would be nowhere safe for children to play.
Georgia James-Olner argued the area should have more recreational space and sports development, not less.
And Iain Stuart Reid added: “Shocking if it happens - Oakfields is a good little park with loads of history. There's enough houses being built at the Eden Park and old radio mast sites.”
A Rugby Borough Council spokesman confirmed the land was owned by the neighbouring Co-Op Funeral Services and had been leased by the council for around 30 years, but the lease expired last year and the Co-Op decided not to extend it.
Co-Op representatives had not responded to a request for comment when the Observer went to press.
A public consultation event will be held at the Rugby Hotel in Sheep Street next Wednesday (October 15) from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, where consultants will be on hand to answer residents' questions.
