THE CONSERVATIVES on Warwickshire County Council have named Coun Izzi Seccombe as their first female leader.

It follows the shock defeat of former leader Alan Farnell at the recent elections which saw the Tories lose overall control of the authority.

Discussions are currently taking place with other parties to establish the administration of the county council, with the Conservatives now holding 26 seats, having lost 12, Labour holding 22, the Lib Dems nine, the Green Party two, with three Independents making up the rest. A announcement on the way forward is expected at the meeting of the full Council at Shire Hall on Tuesday (May 21).

Coun Seccombe has been a county councillor serving the Stour and the Vale division since 2001, and held Cabinet roles for children young people and families and most recently adult social care.

She said: “To lead my group is a great honour and I am proud to have their support, we have some considerable challenges ahead but many opportunities to look at how we best serve the people of Warwickshire.

She has been involved with charities and community groups including The Children's Society and Tysoe Pre School, and was also a prominent campaigner against the so-called 'eco town' at Long Marston.

Coun Alan Cockburn has been appointed Deputy Leader of the Conservative group.

He has also been a county councillor since 2001 holding Cabinet responsibility for finance, highways, and economic development. He is also a Board Member of the Coventry and Warwickshire LEP.

Coun Alan Cockburn said: “We are here to represent all the people of Warwickshire. Like Coun Seccombe, I am extremely proud to have a role to play in the challenges ahead.”
