Lutterworth Athletic 2 Wellingborough Whitworths 0

ATHLETIC started life in the UCL with a comfortable home win against a well organised Whitworths, who finished in the top half last season.

With regulars Mike Lucas and Jake Pantony away, debuts were handed to Nathan Bedford, Harvey Morgan and Callum Wills and all three equipped themselves well.

However, the star man was Jack Sutherland who continually tormented Whitworth’s defence with his mazy runs and quick feet.

Athletic made a sloppy start and could easily have been 1-0 down before great work from Don Ivens allowed Danny Laywood to open his account.

Sutherland continued to carve out openings and was unlucky when a well directed shot crashed against the post.

The game was evenly matched with both keepers doing well to keep the score at 1-0 at half time.

The second half again started well and two good efforts by Adam Laywood, playing in a more forward role, could easily have put the outcome beyond doubt.

On 63 minutes a corner from Laywood was met by Ivens who clinically finished from close range and Athletic then saw the game out with ease.

On Saturday Athletic take on St Neots in what should be a very tight affair.
