MAUREEN Lipman returns to Birmingham Repertory Theatre in October in a brand new play by actor turned writer Oliver Cotton.

Daytona is described as a haunting, funny and poignant play full of mystery with not one but two love stories at its heart.

It tells the story of ballroom dancers Joe and Elli who are planning to win the next big competition.

But the unexpected arrival of a figure from their past threatens to throw everything off balance and forces them to confront a profound moral dilemma.

Maureen Lipman plays Ellie on her return to The Rep where she last appeared in 2005 as the delightful diva Florence Foster Jenkins in Glorious!

Harry Shearer - who voices the Simpsons' characters Mr Burns, Principle Skinner, and Ned Flanders - stars as Joe. He also co-wrote and starred as bassist Derek Smalls in This is Spinal Tap.

It runs from October 21 to 26.

Roxana Silbert, artistic director at The Rep, said: "I’m delighted Oliver Cotton’s compelling and deeply humane play will be part of our re-opening season.

"With the stellar cast of Maureen, Harry and John audiences can expect a fantastic night at the theatre."

Tickets are on sale from The Rep which re-opens on Tuesday, September 3 following its two-and-a-half-year refurbishment.
