BILTON School will open its own sixth form in September.

Head teacher Patsy Weighill confirmed this week the Department for Education has approved its plans.

Pupils have been taught A level lessons at the school over the past year, but in a partnership which has seen around 60 actually enrolled with Coundon School in Coventry.

That arrangement had been expected to continue for at least another two years.

But Ms Weighill said education bosses had recognised the quality of the provision after a very good first set of AS Level results.

It is expected around 140 pupils will enrol in the new sixth form.

"I was on holiday when I received confirmation and could not stop smiling; it means such a lot to the school and our students to have our improvements recognised and to be able to offer our students the opportunity to continue their studies at the school," she told us.

"We will continue to work with Coundon Court to develop and share good practice across the two schools but I know our students and their parents/carers, who are already confident about the quality of our teaching and support, will welcome this news."

Bilton School has also be given planning permission for its new £2.1million sports hall, gym and fitness suite.

Work will begin next month with it expected to open in June next year.
