ANOTHER 400 jobs are to be created at the former Peugeot plant in Ryton.
US-based global event services company Freeman held a ground-breaking ceremony at Prologis Parkto announce its new £14million purpose-built facility on Friday.
Owner Don Freeman travelled over from Dallas to mark the occasion.
The company provides services and equipment for exhibitions, live events and themed attractions, such as Ideal Homes, the London Book Show, the Olympics, the British Grand Prix, Wimbledon, Alton Towers, Warwick Castle and Madame Tussauds.
And the move is its next step in its international growth strategy, having acquired UK-based SO Group earlier this year.
The building is scheduled for completion by April next year with the company hoping to move in by June.
Chief executive officer David Walley said: “We needed good transport links, and a good pool of skilled and unskilled labour. Ryton is ideal.
“We will start to advertise locally soon for new people.
“One of the challenges we have is finding good people so hopefully they can keep their eye out and see if there's any adverts online, in printed media and on the radio.
“Keep an eye out, come along and see what we're about.”
Prologis Park is seeing signs of growth after a shaky start due to the recession.
Prologis senior vice president Alan Sarjant said: “We're building a speculative unit, which is Prologis' first such development since 2007 so it represents us getting our confidence back and getting back into that market.
“We're experiencing consistent customer demand and we think there'll be some more good news stories coming out of here soon.”
This time last year Network Rail announced it was to open a £25million distribution centre there, creating 100 new jobs.
The car factory closed in 2006.
