Hi: 10° Lo:0°
A DRAMATIC intervention by a member of the public resulted in a man being arrested on suspicion of attempting to rape a 14 year-old girl in Wolston on Tuesday night (March 25).
The teenage girl was assaulted in Warwick Road at around 5pm by a man who had travelled on the same bus as her from Coventry.
As they walked from the bus stop, he grabbed her, pushed her to the ground and tried to remove her clothing.
When she screamed, he ran off towards the village centre, but was chased by a member of the public who restrained him until police arrived.
An 18 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape. He was taken into custody for questioning before being released on police bail pending further enquiries.
The girl was not physically harmed, but was very shaken by the incident.
Det Sgt Bob Jamieson said: "This was a very frightening ordeal for the victim, but I would like to assure members of the public that it was an isolated incident and all necessary steps are being taken to prevent it happening again.
"I would also like to thank those members of the public who came to the assistance of the girl and her mother, and for apprehending the suspect before police arrived."
