CHART topping American singer-songwriter Dean Friedman will play a gig in Rugby next month.

A sell-out audience is expected at Lawrence Sheriff School on Saturday, October 5 to see Friedman - whose duet Lucky Stars with Denise Marsa reached number one in the 1970s.

Richard Barnes, of promoter Rugby Roots, said: "This is a great coup for us and a big thing. Many will remember Dean’s chart hits from the 70s but his recent material is excellent also and he’s a first class performer.

"We’re very proud to have been asked to put the show on and are expecting a sell out so we would urge people to secure their tickets without delay."

After enjoying chart success, Friedman released a string of popular songs including Lydia, Rocking Chair, McDonald’s Girl, and Woman of Mine.

The 56-year-old has gone onto compose and produce soundtracks for TV and film, including five seasons of Central TV's hit series Boon and underground cult horror film classic I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle.

The dad of two recently appeared to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and his latest album, the 13-track Submarine Races, has been receiving rave reviews.

Friedman's name has also featured in a less than flattering song title by British satirical band Half Man Half Biscuit while he is said to have influenced the likes of Barenaked Ladies and Ben Folds Five.

Tickets are £18 and available from Rugby music shop Sounds, direct from Rugby Roots on or on-line via www.rugbyroots.com.
