Police target foreign criminals

FOREIGN criminals are the target of a crackdown on Warwickshire's roads.

Warwickshire Police is working alongside the Central Motorway Police Group and officers from Eastern Europe as part of a national operation to identify and tackle foreign criminals using the UK road network to commit crime.

Police officers from Romania, Lithuania and Poland have arrived in the UK to join the campaign, which is aimed at catching travelling criminals who use the roads to avoid detection.

Offences being used by travelling criminals range from shoplifting, fraud, metal theft including stealing catalytic converters from vehicles to burglary, supply and importation of drugs, money laundering and human trafficking for prostitution.

Officers are using various means of intelligence to stop suspected foreign vehicles, before checks are then made to establish if the occupants are wanted by police in the UK or in their home country.

Supt Lee Davenport of Warwickshire and West Mercia Police, said: "We are working closely with our European colleagues and neighbouring police forces to ensure we detect, prevent and convict those responsible for all types of crime across the country. We will continue to target anyone suspected of using the roads to commit crime.”

Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner Ron Ball added the county's geographic position placed it at the hub of the motorway and major road networks, and welcomed the operation.
