Hi: 6° Lo:1° 7 day
A SIMPLE gesture has helped to spread a bit of Christmas cheer.
Garden Gate Flowers placed a posy of flowers behind St Andrew’s Church last Friday lunchtime as a gift for a stranger.
Twenty minutes later, the police were on the phone.
Simon Ainley, co-owner of Garden Gate on Regent Street, said: “I thought: Oh my goodness, they’re not going to arrest me for littering are they?”
Thankfully it was just the flowers’ finder who was Jane Thatcher from the Safer Neighbourhood Team at Rugby Police Station.
She sent us a photo with the following message: “It has taken pride of place on the windowsill where all the officers and staff have appreciated it.”
Simon said: “It’s a delightful thing, to receive flowers and to come across a beautiful posy for free and to be able to enjoy it is truly delightful. It’s the spirit of Christmas isn’t it?”
The posy bore the message: ‘Adopt me, please... our flower friends would love to hear from us and find out where we ended up.’ Contact details for Garden Gate were included.
The shop placed a further two posies around town, but no-one has yet claimed them and Simon promised to do it again.
“We won’t say where or when because that would spoil the surprise,” he added.
