THE new headmaster of Rugby School has been announced today (Thursday).

Peter Green - currently head master of the up to £9,845-a-term Ardingly College in West Sussex - will replace Patrick Derham in September next year.

Mr Green said he felt privileged by his appointment.

"From my experience in the sector and particularly through the intensive recruitment process I feel a real empathy with the ethos and distinctive nature of the school.

"I am looking forward with great excitement to the task of building on the strengths of the school in the coming years."

Mr Green was educated in Scotland and gained a geography MA at Edinburgh.

He spent the early part of his teaching career north of the border before moving in 1996 to Uppingham School where he was a housemaster and head of the geography department.

He was appointed second master at Ampleforth College in 2002 before taking his current job five years later.

Robert Swannell, chairman of the Rugby School Governing Body, said there were a number of excellent candidates.

"It is our belief that in Peter Green we have chosen the outstanding candidate. He has a proven track record of achievement as a head master.

"We believe Peter truly understands Rugby School’s ethos and traditions and is especially well qualified to lead both the school and the Arnold Foundation into the future."

Mr Derham - who took over at Rugby in 2001 from Michael Mavor - is to be the new head of the £10,500-a-term Westminster School in Central London.
