Hi: 6° Lo:1° 7 day
TOM Gleghorn’s excellent century helped Barby secure victory on Sunday as they progressed into the regional rounds of the National Village Knockout Cup.
Barby overcame Geddington by 70-runs to win the Northamptonshire section of the competition and set up a home clash in the next round.
Batting first, Barby started slowly until Loz Mead started to find the middle of the bat on his way to 26.
The fall of his wicket saw captain Gleghorn come to the wicket and he soon set about the bowling, hitting it to all parts as he made an excellent 116.
Rob Field (26) and Will Sinclair (68no) offered excellent support as Barby closed on 249-3 from their 40 overs.
Geddington never really looked like getting close in reply as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Sinclair added to his fine batting display with 2-46 whilst Bikram Singh (2-35), Rob Stipanovic (2-36) and Gleghorn (3-13) helped end the innings at 170. Lee Sutherlands offered most resistance for Geddington when making 51.
THE VICTORY provided a timely boost after Barby fell to a low scoring Warwickshire League Division One defeat against Southam on Saturday.
Tight bowling made life difficult for Barby throughout their innings with only Sinclair (38no), Simon Gear (26) and Gleghorn (26) making worthwhile contributions as they were bowled out for 146.
Barby took regular wickets in reply but were always struggling to defend the total despite Sinclair’s 3-46, Gleghorn’s 2-20 and Stipanovic’s 2-52. Southam reached victory at 147-7 with Jordan Caldecott (47) top scoring.
THE DEPLETED 2nds picked up a losing draw from their home clash with Marston Green.
Marston piled the runs on batting first with Hussain, Habib and Amin all reaching 50 as the total closed on 338-8. Adam Shay and Troy Reeves took two wickets but it was Mick Griffin with 3-77 who was the pick of the attack.
Barby were light on batting and were never going to be able to make a concerted effort to knock off the required runs and survival was the name of the game.
Phil Beagley with 31 and a 61-ball 11 from Richard Odell, supported Nigel Hancock who rolled back the years with 82no batting most of the Barby innings. Barby finished on 170-7 to obtain a losing draw with Khan (3-34) ending as the main wicket taker.
MATTHEW Outhwaite’s first 50 for the club could not prevent the 3rds from falling to a 99-run defeat against Barton Seagrave 2nds.
Outhwaite made 56 as Barby were bowled out for 152 in reply to Barton’s 251-4 declared in which Lund made 111 and Hayes 97.
